The Panzer III was one of the main workhorses of the German armored forces, alongside the Panzer IV. The tank was developed in the second half of the 1930s and was intended to engage and destroy enemy tanks and armored vehicles on the battlefield. The Panzer III was originally intended to carry a 50 mm gun as its main armament. However, as the 37 mm Pak 36 was the standard anti-tank gun of the Wehrmacht at the time, the tank was designed around a 37 mm gun for the sake of standardization, while the turret was designed with enough space to accommodate a 50 mm gun later in its development.
The Panzer III Ausf.E was the first mass-production variant of the Panzer III, with the preceding versions consisting of development prototypes produced in small batches of only a few dozen vehicles. The Ausf.E was armed with a 37 mm gun, two MG34 machine guns mounted in the gun mantlet and another MG34 machine gun in the front hull armor. Although the Panzer III was still relatively uncommon during the early stages of the war, with only a few hundred vehicles taking part in the Polish and French campaigns, it was at the time one of the the best medium tanks in German service and outclassed the vast majority of its opponents on the battlefield.
The model depicts a vignette showing a tank and infantrymen working together on the battlefield. The tank sports the gray-brown camouflage used by the Germans during the early period of World War II and is set in the final days of May 1940, during Operation Fall Gelb, the German invasion of France.
