Sd.Kfz.252

The Sd.Kfz. 252 was a German lightly armoured half-track ammunition carrier. Based on the Sd.Kfz. 250 half-track, it was built by Demag, Wegmann and Deutsche Werke between June 1940 and September 1941.

The Sd.Kfz. 252 shared its chassis and basic hull design with the Sd.Kfz. 250, but featured a fully enclosed armoured compartment. To increase the amount of ammunition carried, it frequently towed a small single-axle Sd.Ah. 32/1 ammunition trailer. During the early years of the Second World War, the vehicle was used primarily by assault gun units, where each StuG was supported by an ammunition carrier.

The vehicle weighed 5.7 tonnes and was powered by a 110 hp Maybach HL 42 TRKM six-cylinder petrol engine, giving it a top speed of 65 km/h. Its crew consisted of two men.

The model depicts an Sd.Kfz. 252 ammunition carrier assigned to the StuG "A" of the 3rd Battery, StuG.Abt. 185. The unit was operating in Estonia in late summer 1941.

Panzer IV Ausf.B

The Panzer IV was a German medium tank produced between 1937 and 1945. Over the course of the war, it became the most numerous tank in Wehrmacht service. Developed alongside the Panzer III in the second half of the 1930s, it was initially armed with a short-barrelled 75 mm KwK 37 L/24 gun and designed to provide fire support for infantry.

The Ausf.B and the nearly identical Ausf.C were the first Panzer IV variants produced in significant numbers, with production of the Ausf.B beginning in May 1938. It incorporated numerous improvements over the Ausf.A, including thicker armour, a more powerful engine and a new transmission. The layout of the upper hull was revised, while a new commander’s cupola and driver’s visor cover were introduced. The radio operator’s machine gun was replaced by a vision port and pistol port. The tank weighed 18 tonnes and had a five-man crew. Its 300 hp Maybach HL 120 TR twelve-cylinder petrol engine gave it a top speed of 42 km/h on roads and 20 km/h cross-country.

The model depicts a Panzer IV Ausf.B as it appeared in France in June 1940 during Operation Fall Gelb.
